Is anybody who is involved in #DoctoralEducation able to point me towards a similar report or study on the UK knowledge society, maybe by #UKCGE or similar?

Doctoral education in Europe today: enhanced structures and practices for the European knowledge society

Currently in a webinar about competency based admissions from the EDEPI project https://www.ntu.ac.uk/c/equity-in-doctoral-education-through-partnership-and-innovation - I share their starting point which is to select doctoral candidates based on potential (which I have found to be more controversial than I expected). #postgraduate #DoctoralEducation #PostgraduateResearch
Equity in Doctoral Education through Partnership and Innovation (EDEPI)

Equity in Doctoral Education through Partnership and Innovation is a project which aims to increase participation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in doctoral education.

I spent 26 hours in the hands of UK Council for Graduate Education at their annual Doctoral Deans and Directors residential on Thursday and Friday.

We listened to experts and talked through approaches to everything from quality assurance to harassment and sexual misconduct (and I volunteered to help at a session for colleagues new to the network/role).

Made a lot of friends and learnt so much.

I'm planning an event on 'The Future of the Doctorate' (will update here asap).

In the meantime, what are your views on its future, given all that's happening?

I couldn’t agree more on the topic of mandatory training for supervisors (and not because we’ve had that here for as long as I remember): it provides a basic level of assurance and support to new supervisors of our postgraduate researchers.

(The full report also points to the value of team supervision and the time pressure supervisors are feeling which I could also comment on at length!)

There’s new research on how PGR students are supervised

There’s notably no clear regulation on the postgraduate research (PGRs) student experience. PGRs in England are supposed to be ā€œcoveredā€ by the Office for Students’ B conditions - but there isn’t anything specific to their experience and they are silent on supervision.

Not really about unionisation, more about cost-benefit analysis of postgraduate research and graduate schools. There’s a different version of this going on in UK institutions… #phd #PostgraduateResearch #gradschool #DoctoralEducation #HigherEducation

Editing a manuscript today (part of a big global survey with follow up interviews) on doctoral student experience in the pandemic and struck (not for the first time) by the longer term psychological impacts of lockdown coping strategies on students, supervisors and administrators. TL:DR There’s a whole boatload of burnout out there, even amongst the ā€˜resilient’ ones. #covid19 #HigherEducation #HigherEd #phd #PostgraduateResearch #DoctoralEducation #Postgraduate #gradschool

I’m seeking recommendations for PhD programs. My masters level graduate work is focused on #posthumanism, and I have extensive experience in #CommunityDevelopment. For my doctoral research I’d like to merge the two fields to re-imagine how we do and be #community in the #Anthropocene. I’m looking for a program that is pretty self-directed and ideally offers opportunities for independent studies. I’m just starting this search process from scratch.

All suggestions welcome!

Yesterday I closed a fantastic alumni event for Postgraduate Researchers in our Faculty of Environment. Lots of common themes and connections (and a keynote from Director of the British Antarctic Survey) but my takeaway is that you won’t realise how transformative a PhD is until you work in a sector which doesn’t directly call on the topic of your thesis. As evidenced by my ex-student who now works for DEFRA, despite her thesis being about the identity and motivations of non-performer music students… #phd #PostgraduateResearch #GraduateSchool #DoctoralStudents #DoctoralEducation
