My institution is hosting this conference next week. I spoke at the first iteration, just an attendee this time.

Contrary to popular opinion Universities aren’t yet equitable ‘woke’ organisations we are actually well off the pace and have a lot of ground to make up especially on race equity (but also gender, disability etc.). And before you right wingers come at me it is our legal duty to do this work under the Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty…

Saying a few words at the start of this today. It isn’t the only project we’ve facilitated via my institution to advance race equity, but it’s had huge impact on the postgraduate researchers it has touched:

Currently in a webinar about competency based admissions from the EDEPI project https://www.ntu.ac.uk/c/equity-in-doctoral-education-through-partnership-and-innovation - I share their starting point which is to select doctoral candidates based on potential (which I have found to be more controversial than I expected). #postgraduate #DoctoralEducation #PostgraduateResearch
Equity in Doctoral Education through Partnership and Innovation (EDEPI)

Equity in Doctoral Education through Partnership and Innovation is a project which aims to increase participation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups in doctoral education.

I couldn’t agree more on the topic of mandatory training for supervisors (and not because we’ve had that here for as long as I remember): it provides a basic level of assurance and support to new supervisors of our postgraduate researchers.

(The full report also points to the value of team supervision and the time pressure supervisors are feeling which I could also comment on at length!)

There’s new research on how PGR students are supervised

There’s notably no clear regulation on the postgraduate research (PGRs) student experience. PGRs in England are supposed to be “covered” by the Office for Students’ B conditions - but there isn’t anything specific to their experience and they are silent on supervision.

Off to London AGAIN tomorrow after a quick gig at our Business School. This time it’s to listen to Chris Husbands talk at The Brilliant Club’s annual lecture. They are a great organisation, connecting postgraduate researchers with secondary school students (amongst other things). https://thebrilliantclub.org/ #phd #PostgraduateResearch #outreach
The Brilliant Club

The Brilliant Club is a UK charity that works with the PhD community to support less advantaged students aged 8-18 to access the most competitive universities and succeed when they get there.

The Brilliant Club
This where our postgraduate researchers who like to work on campus have some of their best and their hardest moments on campus. It’s not the only dedicated space we have (by far) but it’s one of the reasons I know our library cares about my world. #PostGraduateResearch #Library #HigherEducation

Being on the same stage as these experts was really humbling. The professional, academic and lived experience they share was just overwhelming.

One takeaway was an agreed focus on action: as one of my co-panellists said let’s stop measuring things we already know (thanks Avtar Matharu).

And sitting next to Paulette Williams was incredible - she’s one of the reasons I got into this space and yet I had never met her, let alone shared a stage with her. Her analysis of how far we have got and how far we have to go today was spot on.

If you work to advance equity in the academy you must read The Broken Pipeline (if you haven’t already), it’s still relevant (sadly) and wonderfully hard-hitting and concise.
