The question of problems & symptoms is not a matter of definitions, but of #distinctions. Try to distinguish the two, and you will probably figure out for yourself why it is a useful distinction.

One of the problems with living in a world of consumerism is that we are programmed to think that we want stuff. The messages we are inundated with are messages of lack – “you aren’t happy because you don’t have this blender/car/bottle of alcohol/vacation/pair of jeans!” So we think we actually do want or even need all this stuff. It gets hard to differentiate what you really do want from what you’re being programmed to want.
