After about two years, I’ve decided to close down my current Mastodon account. I love the Fediverse, and I love Mastodon and all of the great people whom I had the pleasure to interact with. For those of you reading this, thank you so much for that.
But I need to focus. I need to focus more on my sonics. Of all the microblogging platforms out there, I consider Mastodon the best by far. No creepy algorithms, no obsession with farming clicks and eyeballs. Relatively few influencer types. Quality content all around.
So why did I leave? Because microblogging by its nature is like being intravenously drip-fed little hits of dopamine. It was such an enjoyable experience, having the opportunity like I did to meaningfully engage with all sorts of awesome and inspiring individuals, I kept coming back for more. I loved my interactions there – I think over the past two years, I only had to block two trolls. But time is precious these days, and I need to make. Some day I’ll come back, but not for a while (and probably not self-ho$ting LOL).
I’m not saying that Fediverse microblogging is a net negative, far from it. But for me, right now, it’s a bit of a distraction that I feel is keeping me from fully exploring my own sonic worlds and further developing my own voice with respect to that. And I want to do that with intention. That takes time and focus.
The world appears to be going to crap right now, so it’s a good time to turn one’s back to all the cacophony and drama for a while and just…make. Not to gain followers, not to become rich and famous, just for the sheer satisfaction of doing so, and seeing that some people out there actually dig it too. For me, nothing beats that feeling.
I’m still on Bandcamp, SoundCloud, YouTube, Instagram, and here. In fact, I intend on using this blog more to communicate my thoughts about electronic music as well as to document some of my workflows. I also want to spend more time on Bandcamp/SoundCloud discovering indie artists like myself who are trying to push the boundaries of electronic music in new and interesting ways. I hope to also feature some of those discoveries here.
Stay calm and keep making waves!
