Service design and the Mario complex

At Service Design in Government, I discovered that service designers see themselves as Mario. But that is an unrealistic model for what service design should be.

At Hatch Conference 2025, I led a workshop on #JobsToBeDone, joined debates on #designprocesses, listened to the chatter on #AI and found a rare sense of community in #Berlin. Here are my reflections.

Great article by @smashingmag on #designProcesses. Interesting approaches like hot Potatoe and the loop by #ibm: https://smart-interface-design-patterns.com/articles/perfect-design-process/

I agree that you need to find out what works for you and your team. But it's also important to understand that it depends on the phase of a project and the kind of project. Starting a new product is very different to implementing a new #designToken strategy.

Four Levels Of Customer Understanding — Smart Interface Design Patterns

What people say, feel, think and do are often very different things. How to think about underlying reasons for user behavior, hidden motivations, root causes and the different layers of reality.

We teach #designprocesses a lot.
We teach #teamdynamics sparsely.
We should look more into working as a team. It has such a huge impact on the outcome.
