Rotonda candle holder by Studioforma

Dezeen Showroom: Swiss architecture and design practice Studioforma sought to show the high aesthetic value of waste marble with its creation of the Rotonda candle holder.

The Rotonda candle holder is made of white waste marble streaked with anthracite grey veins, obtained through a collaboration with century-old Swiss natural stone manufacturer Valsecchi Marmi.

Studioforma owner and CEO Alex Leuzinger wanted to create a design that symbolised the epitome of sustainability, beauty and nature.

He gave it a form inspired by the golden ratio – nature's formula for perfection – with eight cylinders encased in circular slabs.

Its circular, cylindrical forms are inspired by the golden ratio

The elements fit into each other and can be arranged as desired.

"The design idea is to create a profound sense of ownership by enabling everybody who purchases the Rotonda candle holder to become the master designer of their home," said Leuzinger.

Explorer vases by Jaime Hayon for BD Barcelona Design

Dezeen Showroom: Spanish designer Jaime Hayon has created a collection of colourful ceramic vases with rounded shapes for furniture brand BD Barcelona Design.

Named Explorer, the vase collection is a continuation of a series of Explorer side tables Hayon designed for the brand.

Explorer is available in three variations, each of which features colourful elements combined into a sculptural vase.

Hayon designed the vases to be both sculptural and functional

One model stands on three white ceramic spheres while another is elevated from the ground by three legs, which extend beyond the height of the centre vase to become separate thin vases.

"The materialisation of these vases requires great skill because of the apparent contradiction of joining a ceramic rounded piece to another rounded shape," said Hayon.

The Explorer vases have a glossy finish

BD Barcelona Design describes the vases as "not just functional, but sculpturally dynamic".

"The rounded shapes are matched up really well with the shades and colours chosen," the brand continued.

The Explorer vases come in a combination of red, green, blue and white colours and have a glossy finish.

Phoenician by Adam Nathaniel Furman for Beit Collective

Dezeen Showroom: London-based designer Adam Nathaniel Furman has created a collection of recycled glass vases and tumblers for Lebanese homeware label Beit Collective.

The Phoenician collection includes a pair of drinking glasses called Blue Quay and a vase called Fluted Buoy. The range is made from recycled glass using a traditional Phoenician glassblowing technique.

Furman has created two glass tumblers for Beit Collective

"I created this line to echo the aquatic and ancient environment of Phoenician cities," said Furman.

"I wanted these pieces to represent a treasure washed up on the beach, coming from ancient civilisations lost for millennia."

A larger vase also makes up the Phoenicia range

Each item in Furman's Phoenician collection comes in turquoise, navy or clear – drawing on the aquatic colours associated with Phoenicians.

Phoenicia was an ancient coastal civilisation that originated in what is now called Lebanon. Many members of its society were mariners in the navy.

The items are informed by the ancient civilization Phoenicia

Beit Collective called on glassblowing artisans who have worked in Lebanon for many generations to manufacture Furman's glass and vase designs.

In the making of the collection the artisans blew molten glass and then placed it into a custom-made cast-iron mould that resulted in the irregularly-shaped Phoenician range.

Tigmi Trading designs rug collection that takes cues from brutalist architecture

Dezeen promotion: Byron Bay rug company Tigmi Trading has released its first in-house-designed rug collection informed by brutalist architecture.

The five-piece luxury rug collection is called Rilievo, which translates to "relief" in Italian.

The rugs are informed by the hard edges of brutalist architecture and feature geometric patterns that intend to mirror the interplay between a building's light and shadows.

The rug collection is informed by brutalist architecture

Founder and creative director of Tigmi Trading Danielle McEwan was influenced by architect Carlo Scarpa when designing the collection, which takes cues from Scarpa's modernist work.

"I have a deep connection with architectural detail and in particular, the way brutalist forms can balance the harshness and strength of materiality with the intricate detail of the design," said McEwan.

"The use of repetitive patterns to create sculptural elements and detail, playing with proportion and light and Scarpa's approach to combining different materials– in our case, the linen – with a precious one such as soft New Zealand wool."

The rugs come in a series of colours

The simplicity of each rug's single colour is offset by the textured relief 'rilievo' of patterns, forming pieces that intend to be timeless.

Tigmi Trading worked with a family-based weaving company in Nepal to create the collection, which is made-to-order in the interest of minimising waste.

Describing itself as a "conscious" brand, the rug-makers has recently become a GoodWeave partner. GoodWeave is a non-profit organisation that works to end child labour in the rug industry.

Geometric lines seen in modernist architecture are echoed in the rug designs

Rilievo intends to echo the brand's commitment to quality and sustainable artisanship.

"Our aim is to keep pushing ourselves and customers to think and buy consciously – beautifully aesthetic, socially and ethically made design – we don’t believe you need to sacrifice one for the other," added McEwan.

"We will continue to design and develop an exciting range of rugs and products that share this ethos."

Acoustic Artwork noise minimisers by Narbutas

Dezeen Showroom: workplace furniture brand Narbutas has created three noise minimisers designed to control the sound and appearance of a room.

The Acoustic Artwork collection includes three acoustic products, called Partitions, Clouds and Tiles, which can be mounted on the wall or ceiling.

The collection includes Partitions

Available in a series of dynamic colours, the collection aims to provide attractive solutions to controlling the acoustics of office space while not compromising on aesthetics.

The partitions are designed to separate various working environments such as areas intended for meetings or socialising.

Acoustic Clouds hang from the ceiling and muffle noise

The Acoustic Partitions in the collection "are walls that speak for themselves" and are designed to manage the flow of movement in an office.

Owing to their name, the Acoustic Clouds hang from ceilings like chandeliers and efficiently absorb ambient sounds.

The Acoustic Tiles are also built to minimise unnecessary noise and come in five different shapes and a selection of sizes in order to cater to various office-based needs.

PET aims to be a sustainable material

Narbutas is committed to creating sustainable products. All of its acoustic noise minimisers are made from PET, which uses more than 50 per cent recycled plastic.
