Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years. In the UKCEH Digital Strategy, we have adopted an Asset Commons approach to enhancing discoverability, access, interoperability, and re-use of our key assets (data, models, methods, services, people, etc.). The focus of the role is therefore to determine opportunities to realising this goal of developing a commons-based approach. You will be part of an expanding multidisciplinary team developing a commons-based approach to enhance integrative science and support interoperability both within UKCEH and with our partner organisations. With this team, you will be developing solutions to enhance FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) access to key data (and other) resources across UKCEH, exploring underlying software architectures to implement a commons within contemporary cloud-based environments. Your job will specifically involve investigating the role of semantic web concepts, including vocabularies and ontologies, within a commons context. Youโ€™ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute thatโ€™s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH. Your main responsibilities will include: Evaluating and extending our capabilities in using vocabularies and ontologies to promote a linked open data approach to describe UKCEH data and other assets (e.g., models, methods, services, people) Taking responsibility for the planning, development and implementation of solutions to implement FAIR access to key UKCEH digital resources using semantic approaches โ€“ and actively engaging environmental scientists in this (in close liaison with our data stewardship team) Helping to determine the software and systems architecture approaches for implementing a commons-based system, including building on appropriate cloud-based data services (in close liaison with our digital research infrastructure team) Assisting in interoperability strategies for related initiatives across UKCEH and the broader environmental science community, including NERC's Environmental Data Service and digital twins Acting as a champion for semantic web/commons-based approaches both within and outside the organisation, including disseminating best practices through high-quality publications Identifying future collaborative opportunities across UKRI and elsewhere around the development of an asset commons approach for UKCEH, supporting research bids where appropriate For the role of Semantic Web Architect, weโ€™re looking for somebody who: Has a good degree in an appropriate subject, as well as a PhD or equivalent relevant experience Has evidence of continuing professional development and up to date knowledge of research in their field Has experience of data modelling principles and concepts to design data engineered pipelines and solutions, involving robust and scalable data integration and management solutions based on organisational standards and policies Has knowledge and experience of semantic technologies, graph databases/ triple stores, RDF, OWL, SPARQL, SPARQL servers (e.g., Fuseki), SHACL, knowledge graphs, as well as commons approaches and the FAIR principles Works with minimal supervision, keeping managers appraised as appropriate Leads and engages others within field and takes ideas forward Applies appropriate project management methods to deliver data products, with strong project management skills through effective delivery of significant projects Can present work clearly and expertly to a variety of audiences including non-specialists, and pursues opportunities to collaborate with others If weโ€™ve just described you, weโ€™d love to meet. To apply, please send us your CV, accompanied by a covering letter which highlights any relevant skills and experience you feel would be well suited for this particular role. If you have any questions about the role or working in the Environmental Data Science team at UKCEH, please feel free to contact Dr Kelly Widdicks ([email protected]). The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is an independent, not-for-profit research institute carrying out excellent environmental science across water, land and air. At UKCEH there are various career paths open to first-class scientists and support staff. We have around 500 scientists and students supported by experts in the fields of IT, commercialisation, finance, communications and HR based across four sites (Wallingford, Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster).
