On December 29th of the previous year Polish energy infrastructure suffered a coordinated cyberattack. According to the recently published report by CERT Polska (English version available at: https://cert.pl/uploads/docs/CERT_Polska_Energy_Sector_Incident_Report_2025.pdf), the perpetuators had been preparing the security breach for months and had one single objective of causing as much damage as possible. The attackers’ communication patterns were found to be characteristic of a malicious activity cluster known as “Static Tundra,” “Berserk Bear,” “Ghost Blizzard,” and “Dragonfly.” As the report notes, “this is the first publicly described destructive activity attributed to this cluster.”

As the ACIG’s editorial team is wrapping up the 2025 issue, this #cyberfriday we invite you to revisit the article “The Role of Cybersecurity in Addressing Express Kidnappings: Challenges and Innovative Solutions” by Khutso Lebea, Sherali Zeadally, and Aditya Sood. This piece of research was published online first and it is the first of the articles that will make up the fifth volume of ACIG.

The article discusses express kidnappings – a type of crime on the rise in many parts of the world. Their perpetuators capture their victims for a relatively short period of time and force them to withdraw big amounts of cash from ATMs or make transfers from their bank accounts. The authors argue that a robust and integrated system of #cybersecurity measures is essential to counter this kind of abuse.
