The Ballochmyle Petroglyphs. Known as cup-and-ring marks, these were most likely carved in the neolithic period some four to six thousand years ago. Discovered in 1986 on a rock wall near the Ballochmyle Viaduct in Ayrshire, they're the most extensive area of such carvings so far uncovered in Britain. To give you an idea of the scale, the largest of the ring marks are around 50cm across.

These might not look like much, but they're the oldest man-made things I''ve featured so far. They're cup and ring marks carved into rocks on the hills around Cochno on the outskirts of Glasgow. Dating from the Neolithic period between four and six thousand years ago, similar petroglyphs can be along the Celtic fringe of Europe. However, it's not known why they were made.

A visit to Lordenshaw Hill in Northumberland. Site of amazing neolithic rock art including the horseshoe rock and the channel rock.

To add context for anyone interested in the layout of the #Prehistoric site, here is some lidar data, which makes it much clearer than Google Maps can, as it reveals what's hidden under the tree cover. I'd scrambled through those ditches a hundred times and never realised how they formed a picture with the landscape until I saw maps showing this.

My guess would be that they post-date the #CupAndRingMarks (second pic) outside the embankments, but I'm no expert.

Apparently #WaterfallWednesday is a thing too.

My favourite #Northumberland #waterfall is Routin Lynn.

The name means 'roaring pool' in Old English, and is also the name of a nearby farm. The steep little gorge into which the waterfall drops combines with with large #prehistoric ditches, and another deep burn that joins this one, to create an enclosed, triangular area.

The usage is unknown, but just outside the ditches is a large rock outcrop with #CupAndRing carvings.

A lot of people comment on how peaceful it feels here.
