An Ontario court has acquitted Bernard Doyle in the 1996 death of his stepson after he served three years in prison for manslaughter. Now living in St. John's, he's long maintained the toddler's death in their Cambridge, Ont., apartment was accidental, in a case involving the testimony of disgraced pathologist Charles Smith.
The registry shows a significant number of cases were due to false guilty pleas and “imagined” crimes or “dirty thinking,” such as the victims of disgraced coroner Dr. Charles Smith. Also, the number of Indigenous people wrongfully convicted represent roughly one in five of the documented cases.
