Vagus means "wandering" because this nerve kinda meanders all over the body. It functions at ~10 second timescales for certain autonomic stuff like blushing. Also regulates the gut, immune system, heart rate, etc. So it does a bunch of random stuff that all gets disrupted when it's pinched by an inflamed brain.
