"There’s an awful lot of religious privilege that flows from the census stage and that needs to be changed." -- Mike Dove, chair of the Census21 group.

The Census21 group, of which the NSL is a part, is responding to a new pushback from religious leaders on the census question change.

'Religious privilege': Showdown looming between atheists and church groups over census question

Religious organisations are pushing back to a proposed question change in the 2026 census.

We'd love to see some of the ambiguity removed from the responses to the Census question on religion -- and what better way to do this than by the addition of a yes/no filter question?

The ABS is proposing a change to the religion question for the 2026 Census to establish whether someone actually has a religion before asking about their religious beliefs.

The ABS is seeking public feedback on this proposal by Friday 8 September.

Let the ABS know that you support the addition of a filter question!

The response from the ABS to phase 1 of the 2026 Census review -- to which the NSL made a submission as part of the Census21 campaign -- indicates they may consider a yes/no filter question for religious data collection.

This change makes sense in terms of data collection accuracy and is something that pro-secular groups have been campaigning for for many years.

Does anyone here work with #Statcan #Census21 data?
Does anyone have any system for dealing with the undifferentiated mess of categories and subcategories?

We updated our London Census Data Explorer again this week.. now with "Ethnicity, identity, language & religion" data: 🗺️ https://apps.london.gov.uk/census-explorer/

Here, for example you can see the % change in Buddhists from 2011 to 2021 by LSOA... if that's what you're interested in! 😀

In the 2021 England and Wales census, 6.9% of 16-to-24-year-olds identified as LGB+ and 1.0% as trans, in both cases a larger proportion than in any other age group.

Of those who completed the 2021 census questions, 1.54% identified their sexual orientation as gay or lesbian and 1.51% as bisexual or pansexual; and 0.54% gave their gender identity as other than cis.

But "no response" was at 7.5% and 6% respectively, probably disproportionately so among older people.

Another look at the #ONS data on #gender and sexual orientation: '#London also had higher proportions of people identifying as #transgender men (0.16%) and #trans women (0.16%) when compared with the rest of England and Wales.' Gosh. No wonder we're seen as such a threat. THREE in every 2,000 people. Fewer than that outside London. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64184736 #Census21

Norwich, home to Alan Partridge, is also ‘the bisexual capital of England and Wales’. Interesting to see ONS trying to count LGBTQ populations. Undercounts at this stage I suspect as there’s work to be done in building trust, especially among #trans people and LGBTQ people who also belong to other minorities . https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jan/06/england-and-wales-census-counts-trans-and-non-binary-people-for-first-time #Norwich #AlanPartridge #bisexual #LGBTQ #census21
