Aligning U.S. policy with enforcing rules and universal rights is more likely to create conditions for an eventual just political solution, compared to perpetuating rhetoric about an increasingly unattainable two-state vision divorced from reality on the ground.
Instead of continuing to push for the increasingly unrealistic two-state framework, the United States should recognize the current reality of an entrenched one-state situation where Israel rules over millions of Palestinian non-citizens through an apartheid-like system denying them full rights.
The U.S. should use its influence to make sure #Israel adheres to international law and liberal norms of rights and freedoms for all people in the territories under its control. It should also take concrete steps such as demanding #ceasefires, ending illegal Israeli settlements, conditioning U.S. aid based on human rights standards, and supporting accountability for alleged war crimes.
