NEW | France is criminalizing pro Palestine activism to shield Israel from criticism

Human rights groups and UN experts are warning that France is increasingly suppressing pro Palestine activism and freedom of expression under the guise of combating antisemitism amid Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The controversy erupted over a proposed French law that critics said aimed to criminalize criticism of Israel and equate anti Zionism with antisemitism through vague “terrorism glorification” provisions and restrictions on political speech.

Rights organizations condemned the bill as an attack on civil liberties while nearly 700,000 people signed a petition opposing it before the legislation was withdrawn.

The crackdown has also included attempts to ban Palestine solidarity protests police violence against student demonstrators and prosecutions targeting activists academics journalists and politicians including French Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan over statements supporting Palestinian rights.
