Deep Listening Day #38 — Patti Smith: Horses (1975). I don't recall if I bought this LP while I was still in HS or not. I am certain it was essential to me. I sang along to Gloria any time I heard it long before I owned the record. and I did again.

The #Shangri-Las are one of those extraordinary bands. The absolute goddesses of #rocker culture. At the end of the 1960s, #mainstream #culture and #hippies had taken over #music, and even rockers suddenly became like Easy Rider with long hair in the western United States. It wasn't until 1977, with the advent of #punk rock, that this culture returned, and with a bang.
The Shangri-Las only had one reunion after their split in 1968, and that was TATATA... in 1977 at #CBGB's together with the #Ramones, #Blondie, and the Dead Boys. There's a story that Patty Smith and Mary Weiss gave each other autographs because they were such big fans of each other.

"In his book The Heebie-Jeebies at #CBGB’s: A Secret History of #Jewish #Punk, Steven Beeber chronicles the Jewish lineage that led to #NewYork #punkrock. It goes from #LennyBruce, “the patron saint of punk,” to #LouReed, to #JonathanRichman, to #Suicide, to #RichardHell to Joey and Tommy #Ramone. “As it originated in #Manhattan’s #LowerEastSide in the early 1970s,” Beeber writes, “punk rock was the apotheosis of a Jewish cultural tradition that found its ultimate expression in the generation born after the #Holocaust.”

It’s a fascinating read, and one that had a parallel in #WashingtonDC #SethHurwitz, the founder of the #930Club in #Washington, is a local legend. He grew up in #Potomac, #Maryland, the same suburb I did."
