Wikipedia on Instagram: "Have you heard of Hannibal? Recognized as one of the most successful military tacticians and generals of Western antiquity, Hannibal Barca was born in 247 BCE in Carthage, a powerful city-state in North Africa. The son of the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal was introduced to military life at an early age and reportedly swore an oath to remain Rome’s enemy for life. During the Second Punic War, he became one of history’s most formidable commanders, leading Carthaginian forces on an audacious campaign against Rome. In 218 BCE, Hannibal marched his army – including war elephants – across the Pyrenees, through Gaul, and over the Alps into Italy. For more than a decade, he fought a series of battles that are still studied for their tactical brilliance, winning decisive victories at Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae. Although he was never able to capture Rome itself, Hannibal’s campaigns weakened the Republic and forced it into a prolonged struggle for survival. After his eventual recall to defend Carthage and defeat at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE, Hannibal continued to serve as a statesman and military advisor abroad before his death around 183–181 BCE. Carthaginians were renowned for their commercial prowess, ambitious explorations, and unique system of government, which combined elements of democracy, oligarchy, and republicanism, including modern examples of the separation of powers. Despite having been one of the most influential civilizations of antiquity, Carthage is mostly remembered for its long and bitter conflict with Rome, which threatened the rise of the Roman Republic and almost changed the course of Western civilization.
