I'm still thinking about this. Last year, this stretch of highway was 3 lanes. The traffic flowed through quickly and smoothly. Then, DOT decreased it to two lanes and a shoulder. Now, traffic comes to a standstill approaching and in this stretch of road, leading to increased idling and exhaust, wasted fuel and vehicle wear.
There's some idiocy involved in the idea that tearing down the highway will make the traffic disappear. All of those cars will wind up on local roads, take longer to travel the same distance, creating more air pollution, to get from one stretch of highway to the next.
