Devil May Care by Bob Dorough, released on Bethlehem in 1956.

Review by Scott Yanow

Vocalist-pianist-lyricist Bob Dorough's first record as a leader is a pretty definitive set . Assisted by his longtime bassist Bill Takas, drummer Jerry Segal and sometimes trumpeter Warren Fitzgerald and vibraphonist Jack Hitchcock, Dorough performs near-classic renditions of such songs as "Old Devil Moon," "Yardbird Suite," "Baltimore Oriole," "Devil May Care" and "Johnny One Note." Recommended.

Tomorrow's the big day ~ SPRING! I know it doesn't feel very Spring-y but the sun will return, promise.
I also promise you'll love Blossom Dearie's "They Say It's Spring"; she debuted it in 1958. By Marty Clark (#lyric) & Bob Haymes (#music), it's got this ten bar refrain that's just the bee's knees. I'm determined to cover it (in my key), make it last six minutes LOL

Jazz De Chambre by Buddy Banks, released on Le Club Français Du Disque

Pretty hip stuff -- recorded in Paris, but featuring some leading lights of American bohemia! ..features work by a quartet led by bassist Buddy Banks, and featuring work by American players Bob Dorough on piano and Roy Haynes on drums, as well as the French musician Jimmy Gourley on guitar. Gourley's tone is excellent on the session, and he really dominates the proceedings over piano work by Dorough -- especially on the tracks "I Love You", "Line For Lyons", "Night In Tunisia", and "Buddy Bank's Blues". - Dusty Groove

Blue Christmas Again

I’ve had a very busy penultimate week of term and am out of energy so instead of attempting a new post I thought I’d repost this “festive” classic. I posted this one during the “festive” season” in 2013 and haven’t posted it since. Until now. The band is led by none other than Miles Davis; the other members are Frank Rehak (trombone), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), and Willie Bobo (bongos); the arrangement is unmistakably by Gil Evans. The vocalist is the legendary Bob Dorough who also wrote the lyrics.

“Bah Humbug” never sounded so cool!

P.S. I’m not particularly blue myself, just tired…

😂 I'd not heard this tune before. It's excellent. Especially the lyrics.

"Lots of hungry, homeless children in your own backyards
While you're very, very busy addressing
Twenty zillion Christmas cards
Now, Yuletide is the season to receive and oh, to give and ah, to share
But all you December do-gooders rush around and rant and rave and loudly blare"
