How big are your scuppers that a toilet brush fits? My scuppers are 2½-centimeter (1-inch) holes, and the boat has 6 in total.

Since I buy onions, which come in those nets, I have the nets on hand. I'm happy to repurpose them as scupper filters.

The nets do get grungy. They have to be rinsed every month or two over the winter. They may even be biodegradable because they seem to change to a flimsy texture.

In the fall, every day I pick leaves off the fore well, stern deck, and roof.

When it rains, water flows in various gutters and channels to the scuppers. Scuppers are short pipes or holes out the sides of the boat.

An accumulation of leaves slows the water and clogs the scuppers.

I loosely roll up plastic-mesh onion nets and plug one into each scupper, as a filter to stop leaves but not water.

Up to that bridge in the distance, this stretch of canal would have boats moored here—for a few days or up to 2 weeks. It's near shops, bus stops, bins, and a water point.

But in a greedy miscalculation, Canal & River Trust put up a sign, and now this stretch is empty: "Winter mooring permit holders between 1 November—28 February." Nobody bought winter permits; nobody else can stop here to moor. It's a waste.
