Last Saturday, the 5th, was a clear, warm October day, with a massive migratory wave predicted overnight. I checked out my local recreation park, Grant Park. Although I didn't see an awesome variety of species, there was definitely a marked increase in bird activity from what I had observed over the summer and particularly the past few weeks. Many of these birds were taking advantage of swarming insects and the abundant dragonflies feeding on them. Here are a few shots of what appeared to be a good number of Blackpoll Warblers, or a few very hyperactive ones -- always possible. I counted at least five in the small area I staked out. See alt-text for my corny humor and other details. I'll post some more photos over the next few days.

Blackpoll warbler (Setophaga striata) - Island in the Net

I've been using the Merlin Bird ID app to identify a bunch of birds hanging out in my backyard and even got some decent photographs of them. This morning, the app picked up the chirping of a Blackpoll warbler. Intrigued, I scoured my Lightroom catalogue and lo and beheld, I discovered I'd already photographed two of these birds at my backyard feeder. The funny thing is, I was clueless about what I was doing and photographed them right through the sliding door. You can spot the glass reflection.
