For years I've been planning to visit Björkö island in Lake Mälaren to see the site of the ancient viking trading Hub of Birka. This summer we finally did it. It's two hours on a boat each way from Stockholm, but worth it to hear archaeologists explain what it was like 1000 years ago. There's also a reconstruction of part of the town but I liked much more the reconstructed boats. #Birka #Vikings

Många vill se vikingarnas räder som ärofyllda och modiga, men faktum är att en stor del av de nordiska förfädernas verksamhet var slavhandel. De tog människor tillfånga och sålde dem vidare eller utnyttjade dem som arbetskraft. Det var en för vikingarna lönsam slavhandel. Här får vi följa två individuella öden: en kvinna som blir sexslav och en man som lyckas bli fri genom att utnyttja sina stridskunskaper.
