#NestingSeagull in supermarket car park saved from sun by smart-thinking staff
by Nicholas Bourne, May 31, 2026
"A seagull nesting in a roadside hole next to a Morrisons supermarket was given extra protection from this week's heat when staff coned the area off and put a sun shade over it.
"Shopper Heather Ward, 49, from Caerphilly thanked 'lovely' staff at #Cardiff's Llanishen store after traffic cones were placed around the nest with a sheet tied over them to protect the bird from the sun.
"Ward said she remembered spotting a seagull at the same spot last year and this bird did not seem fazed, despite cars passing by on the road on one side and vehicles parked 'inches away' on the other.
"Customers also left the bird food and it is thought it left its nest late on Friday or very early on Saturday morning.
" 'They'd put cones around the bird and tied a sun sheet over the top to protect it from the heat, and given it some water and food,' said Ward."

#Catbird update. Catty-Kay is back in the nest, so hopefully, she will lay some eggs soon. Lots for them to eat after the rain, though they seem to enjoy the grape jelly I left out for the #Orioles. 🍇 🐦

Well, I discovered where the #Catbirds are nesting -- in the Rhododendron bush in front of the house (I accidentally disturbed the nest and got scolded). When I was inside the house, I peeked at the nest from behind a curtain. No eggs or nestlings yet. But I'll keep my eyes and ears out for baby catbirds, since Catty-Kay and Cat-King-Cole have paired up!

If you ever get one of these car shelters, get one like this. At this moment, there are three active bird nest under this thing, and there has been a nest that has already fledged out.
All of the birds appear to be House finches. (Not sparrows.)
The number of Bird-nests around my folks old house is crazy. 3 finch nests, 1 phoebe nest, 1 wren, 1 chimney swift, and 1 black vulture nest within 100 feet. All active. Some are second time this year
