An interesting reading inspired by Chizkuni:
The serpent spoke to Eve because he'd already eaten from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. So no matter how cunning or subtle he may have been, this would at least have given him the option of doing good.
So was he really tricking Eve? Perhaps to get Adam in trouble and make her his wife, or whatever other theory you subscribe to.
But perhaps he was doing what he thought - knew! - to be the right thing. Perhaps he was helping free man for the furtherance of good. Aren't we told that converts and Baal Teshuva are holier for having walked a harder path to Hashem? Or as Sefer HaYashar says, the evil done on Earth is the peel to the fruit of good deeds; a necessity to protect, shape, and bring good into being.
Perhaps the serpent took the long view, and we're all better off for it.
Tikkun Olam is Tikkun Adam!
