day out with my #CommunityLivingroom fam to #beamish open-air museum. it was beautiful but shocking to hear the massive inequality between the thousands of miners killed & effectively slaving away for a pittance & the other classes living in relative luxury comparing, even compared to many of us today.
i am 6ft tall & spend 10 min at the coalface only 80m into the hill but i struggled to cope having to bend over in the low tunnel. the guide told me there's a photo of one miner there who was 6ft7 who worked there decades.
if you aren't convinced we should stop digging up fossil fuels, this place shows just the human suffering is an unjustifiable price to pay for energy. and there are plenty of alternatives.
if thatcher had invested in developing new work opportunities in the north, we wouldn't be dealing with generations of abandoned & neglected working class communities voting reform today.
