Basildon has become Essex’s first fully electric bus depot following a £30.6 million project by First Bus, #Essex County Council and the Department for Transport’s ZEBRA2 scheme. The Cherrydown Way depot now operates 55 zero-emission buses across #Basildon and South Essex, offering quieter journeys, improved air quality and a better passenger experience. The project received a £4.8 million ZEBRA2 grant alongside £25.8 million from First Bus, funding new high-capacity charging infrastructure using renewable electricity. First Bus aims for an entirely electric fleet by 2035, with the Basildon depot saving an estimated 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The project is part of a national decarbonisation programme, which has introduced over 1,500 electric buses, making First Bus a #UK leader in clean public #transport. Officials marked completion at an event on 20 November.
