R3 PanSTARRS: An Orion Comet
"from the Craigieburn Mountain Range in New Zealand. Visible in the deep background image are the Orion Nebula, Barnard's Loop, and through R3's tail, the bright star Saiph, the sixth brightest star in the constellation of Orion."

Astronomy Picture of the Day

A different astronomy and space science related image is featured each day, along with a brief explanation.

2/
Barnard's Loop: The giant red semi-circle on the left is a massive emission nebula. Itโ€™s a remnant of multiple supernovae that occurred millions of years ago, creating a "bubble" of hot gas that we are looking through.

The Orion Nebula is probably well known to most people, it's so bright that it's visible to the naked eye. However, there's so much more going on in that region of space. Also visible in this image is De Mairan's Nebula, Running Man Nebula, Horsehead Nebula, Flame Nebula and Barnard's Loop

Casper the Friendly Ghost above Barnard's Loop
====================================

Barnardโ€™s Loop is a huge arc formed emission nebula in the constellation Orion, expaning over about 600 arcminutes as seen from our point of view, covering much of the constellation. This image just covers a small part of the loop, close to the star Alnitak.

Above the loop, thereโ€™s Messier 78 - the so called Casper the Friendly Ghost nebula. Itโ€™s a diffuse reflection nebula roughly 1.350 light years away from us, overlayed by the dark nebula LDN 1627.

A final detail Iโ€™d like to point out is the dust pillar at the bottom of the image, featuring a tiny reflection nebula at its top.

As the moon dips behind the shadow of the earth, the stars and nebula of the night sky begin to show themselves. Here is how that looks to a deep sky camera setup!
