They #bought a company called #Macromedia, which itself was a merger of the #Authorware and #Director developers, and then bought out their competitor #FutureWave and renamed their main product to #Flash.
When they bought Macromedia, Adobe even got access to a few things that they specifically were told to #divest TO Macromedia for antitrust reasons, like FreeHand.
