ReactOS introduces a new ATA driver and a new Live CD
The ReactOS project, which is an “open-source Windows” operating system that focuses on being binary-compatible with Windows, has seen interesting events that happened during this week.
In order to extend support to more computers, the new ATA storage driver has been introduced to ReactOS for the first time. According to a merged pull request that has been made since 2024, a new PnP-aware ATA storage stack for PATA and AHCI devices has been implemented to support a wider range of systems that can now boot ReactOS.
Source: cbialoruckiThis change is going to make ReactOS reachable to more people by making it bootable on more computers that use SATA, AHCI, PATA, and ATAPI devices, while also preserving the original UniATA driver in case there are problems with the new driver. Moreover, this introduces the below new components:
The boot CD has also seen a massive improvement that changes how users will be able to try out ReactOS on their computers before installation. This is actually a merger project that fuses both the live CD and the text-based installation disks, which means that only one ISO file that contains both the live system and the textual installation phase is produced.
So, when you download ReactOS, you’ll now be presented with two options: to try out a live ReactOS system, or to install it to your computer. This means that you’ll be able to test-drive ReactOS on your computer without any friction. With support of the new ATA driver, more computers should be able to boot to ReactOS hopefully without any issues. This merger also reduces confusion when people try to download ReactOS, ensuring a more streamlined user experience.

Dear Friends whoo can-can use Mastodon,
1) It took me a while but I am using Mastodon from any hardware/software combination. Even #Windows at the local library.
2) Can I say the same ease of use about my hardware and #software usage? [Clue ~ NO!]
3) For example this morning using three different screen-shot programs I was barely able (eventually successful) to take a partial desktop #screenshot.
4) And so I looked for a new OS. #FreeDOS in #ReactOS maybe? Heavens still not available for every day use after 30 years of development? Wot?
5) #EasyOS developer is asking about what desktop colour scheme people prefer. The choices are all two tone monochrome. We honestly have been using colour monitors for 30 years AND if people want #monochrome they can change to blue and light blue or red and pink. What sort of crazed time wasting is this?
Anyway enough whingeing from me the most terrible person in the #development cycle (an actual end user)
I am now going to finish my herbal tea. Pray to the St of GNU

Never mind just Linux; this would seem to raise serious issues for any group producing their own kernel without an army of lawyers on staff e.g. *BSD, RedoxOS, Graphene, ReactOS, Haiku, illumos and perhaps even plan9 and operating system textbooks and learning frameworks like FluxOSKit. There is furthermore some significant scariness about packets crossing borders rendering ppl liable for violations of all this when passing through spaces wherein USA agents may apprehend them.
