In case anyone is struggling getting the "Line In" on their #SoundBlaster #Audigy 5 card to work for recording, I figured out how to bypass the garbage "creative control panel" which doesn't seems to acknowledge that the card actually even has a "Line In" jack.

Long story short: Disable the "What you hear" recording device in the classic "Windows 7 style" sound control panel (mmsys.cpl) and "Line in" might just magically stop being "Currently Unavailable".

The Audigy 5 arguably has the worst software package I have ever seen on a Creative product.

Got an broken Sound Augigy 2 ZS with missing sound on one channel. Turns out there were missing components in the area around the amplifier chip. Since the second channel was working, I pulled out the datasheet and measured the components on the other channel and replaced the missing ones. Only had 0603 components at hand and the smaller 0402 ones which were the correct size.
It got a little crowded but it is working in rhe end

New #Linux #PC #build lessons learned:

1. Modern default "HD-Audio" onboard
#sound #chipsets are complete and utter shite, and almost impossible to make work decently under Linux. Yes, even if you use pulseaudio or pipewire.
2. The Creative SoundBlaster
#Audigy Fx looks like it would be another EMU10K1-based card. It ISN'T. It has a crappy RealTek HD-Audio chipset that may even be worse than what's already on your motherboard. Don't waste your money.
3. The Audigy 5, aka Audigy Rx,
IS an #EMU10K1 card, and sounds great. Just use the snd_emu10k1 driver, it's all you'll need. But it has both analog AND SPDIF optical outputs, and it DEFAULTS to using the SPDIF output even if there's nothing connected to it. Make sure you set the 'Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack' control ON in your mixer if you're using the analog jacks, or you'll get no sound.
4. But gad, it sounds SO NICE once you get it working.

I'm avoiding a tough soldering job on the giant #GravisGamePad project, so here's my home-made, proof-of-concept #Audigy #Gameport
adapter - soon, owners of a #CreativeLabs #SoundBlaster SB0240, SB0350, SB0360, SB0900 or SB0090 card (I *think* this covers the compatibility list) will have somewhere to plug in their Gravis GamePads*!

*Other brands of gamepad are available.

#3dprinting

This is a Creative #Audigy, a soundcard notorious for a) being great for #retrogaming PCs, b) featuring so many outputs they put the 15-pin gameport on a second bracket, c) generally missing that bracket on the second-hand market.

I have no idea how popular this will be, but there's enough Vogons threads on the topic to suggest it'll be of use to *someone*, so I plan to reproduce and sell these Audigy gameport cables, and fully #opensource the design so it can also be made by others.

I bought a used sound card, it's really great. @soundblaster Creative #Audigy SE 7.1/PCI A very good sound card: https://amzn.to/2G1ISTH
