I-Level -- Minefield 12"

We recently watched the docco Record On: New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies on SBS. It’s worth a watch. Of particular interest was an interview with Arthur Baker, who mentioned that he had been working with I-Level at the time.

I used to love I-Level. I’ve got three of their singles, but has always been my favourite.

Minefield was such a massive tune in its day. The sound of being 17 for me.

I still frequently get the B-side, Number 4 as an earworm. It's been 40-odd years now.

This 12” has the added bonus of having the best mix of their other big tune, Give Me, on it.

I used to live with a cat who would use my records as a scratching post. The sleeve of this record is evidence of that.

New Order, Confusion (FAC93), 1983 on Factory

This was the sixth single from New Order, put out by Factory in 1983 as a follow up to “Blue Monday.” Produced by and co-written with DJ Arthur Baker, it charted well in the UK – though clearly nothing could match up to the massive success and influence of “Blue Monday.”

My copy—via Waterloo Records in Austin TX—is actually an Australian pressing (Artarmon) “Released in Australia by Gap Records Under Licence.” Fun to have records from a continent I’ve never visited.

Let's give a little plug here for one of the experts on the 1980s, Nina Blackwood.

She was a member of the very first group of MTV VJs and she has been a music scholar since age 4! I rarely use the word, "awesome," but Nina Blackwood really is awesome. It would be worth looking into whether she is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, so maybe we can get her into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
