Word Bombs
From the Times of Israel:
In a video statement, [Israel's Defence Minister Yoav] Gallant warned the chief of the Iran-backed Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, “not to make a mistake.”
“You have made mistakes in the past, you have paid very heavy prices. If… an escalation or conflict develops here, we will return Lebanon to the Stone Age."
Macho rhetoric, that, although admittedly not very rhetorical. And of a certain tradition.
Compare to what Richard Armitage, US Secretary of State, told Pakistan's Head of ISI just after the Al Qaida attacks on September 11, 2001:
"Pakistan [can] either totally acquiesce to the Bush administration’s demands for “cooperation” in the “war on terror” or “Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the Stone Age.”"
Men threatening to do with bombs what they can't do with words.
And thinking it can work.
