Courtesy of Oliver Frotalot 😂 (First Dog on the Moon), that Antechinus means "not an echidna", they have the unusual habit of neatly turning small bony animals' skins inside out while eating them, and because of semelparity, they deserve their surname. 🤯😱

Antechinus: The tiny marsupials where males have sex until they die — then females eat their corpses

All species in the antechinus genus have the same frenzied mating system, where males' testes disintegrate before a mammoth sex session that ends in them dying from organ failure.

Life is tough for these Australian males: "males drop dead at the end of a one to three week breeding season, poisoned by their own raging hormones."

Inspiring: Cute Tiny Critters Eat Males That Die After Marathon Orgies, Scientists Discover

They may look cute, but these tiny, fierce marsupials are quite the party animal – with many dropping dead after lengthy sex fests – and others becoming cannibals.

All male antechinuses die due to sex-fuelled exhaustion, and it's recently been observed that still-living male and female members will take advantage of the cheap energy boost by feasting on their fallen comrades.

This cute #mammal is an #antechinus. I knew nothing about them, so got intrigued. Oh, wow.

The male of the species kills itself with #sex. It does nothing but shag, with as many females as possible, sometimes more than one at the same time. With sessions lasting up to 14 hours. It has that much sex, its body falls apart. It dies in a rampant sex fuelled frenzy.

This all before its 1st birthday.

What do you have planned for your weekend of debauchery?

I THINK this is a native antechinus, but I could be wrong and it's just a (feral) house mouse. I would love it if anyone could confirm (or deny!) my identification. Supposedly the bilobed ears and the slight rim of white fur around the eyes should mean antechinus.
