At present groups of neighbouring constabularies often share a Roads Policing Unit with various #ANPR capabilities - the local #Councils also have #ANPR schemes used for parking / bus lane enforcement, but these don't always share data and monitoring posts on car forums I've seen from serving #Police Officers they claim there's a lot of "red tape" to go through to get ANPR data, even within the RPU.

Most of the time its just used to catch those without vehicle #insurance, the leadfooted and those who are suspected of #DUI (especially #drugs use and/or using their vehicle for #transport as part of a drugs dealing network)

Even GB [1] with a significant amount of #ANPR cameras, centralised vehicle licensing department and common formats for registration marks does not seem to have or use this - not for lack of technology as companies like Cleartone in #Wales have been building systems which can do this for about 20 years.

ANPR data is extensively used for gathering evidence for serious #crimes, and is gathered at things like car meets, raves etc but I suspect constabularies end up drowning in data and not being able to process it that quickly (or else I'd be hearing of a lot more folk being pulled up for things like undeclared mods..)

Most ANPR schemes tend to be only on highways and big towns..

It is pretty exciting - seeing #ANPR outside of malls, but so bloody weird for them to even invest in something like this when it's so clearly stated and reiterated that we're moving towards implementing #MLFF tolls nation-wide. They even had to create a whole new mobile app just for this test.

This only tells me that they're not confident that MLFF would be deployed 'live' any time soon in this country, which is... totally plausible, OR these highway concessionaires are just too bloody rich and have too much money on their hands - which is the likeliest candidate. But meh, the answer's prolly both.
