Nunca había escrito nada antes de los 17 años. A esa edad me inicié y lo hice directamente en forma de novela, no de diario o de poesía que es lo habitual en la adolescencia. En esa época yo acababa de instalarme en Bruselas (ciudad de la que procede mi familia materna y paterna) para estudiar en la universidad, pero no me sentía europea sino japonesa, ya que nací en Japón y allí pasé mis primeros años. Dado que hablaba fluidamente el japonés tenía como meta acabar los estudios para regresar a Tokio y trabajar como traductora-intérprete del francés y el inglés al japonés. Al cumplir los 21 años lo hice y mi experiencia fue desastrosa, lo cuento en Estupor y temblores, que escribí años más tarde. Entonces regresé a Bruselas, tenía 23 años y me sentía una fracasada. No sabía qué hacer con mi vida y decidí explorar la vía de la escritura, ya que tenía a mis espaldas diez novelas escritas, que nunca había publicado.
