The Demolished Man is a science fiction novel by American writer Alfred Bester, which won the first Hugo Award in 1953. An inverted detective story, the novel was first serialized in three parts, beginning with the January 1952 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction magazine, followed by publication of the novel in 1953. The novel is dedicated to Galaxy's editor, H. L. Gold, who offered suggestions during its writing. Bester's original title was Demolition!, but Gold persuaded him to change it. - Wikipedia

Alfred Bester's first novel is a stunning thriller featuring telepathy and murder in the 24th century, spanning the solar system, featuring characters with 1/4 and @ in their names, which makes it feel quite contemporary ,unlike much 50s sci-fi.

@lpl @Kitty It was a name of a spaceship from #AlfredBester's novel "The Stars My Destination" (or "Tiger! Tiger!", depending on the edition). One of my faves, recommended read, even if some of the names sound...odd these days, e.g. a heroine is called Jiz 🤷‍♀️

The deserved anger following the recent revelations of Neil Gaiman’s abuses will lead to a re-examination of what he did or did not, liked or not liked, this is probably inevitable.

I think of Alfred Bester’s "The Stars My Destination”, where the (criminal) protagonist commits violent SA, and for which Gaiman wrote a foreword some years ago explaining why he thought it’s a good novel. I also think this, and I hope the book will survive this turmoil to come
