In the UK, its illegal to do so, but of course in precarious #gigecnomy & #zerohours contract settings, that's not applicable!

Exploitative practices have been common across the UK's #universities - mainly through forms of #zerohours contracts often dignified by being called 'sessional work'.... now #OxfordUniversity has lost a case on the denial of employment rights to two #academics over a 15 year period in which they were employed on 'sham contracts'.

This sort of employment is too widespread in the HE sector, so it would be good if #university HR departments took note & ended the practice

For many of us #zerohours contracts are something that happens to others; we sympathise but have little direct experience of its insidious impact on life, aspirations & general #mentalhealth.

Here's a long read, which explores one person's experience; often refusing the required subservience, Rose Atkinson says 'I don’t just want to live, I want to thrive. And I don’t think that’s too much to ask'!

Its heartbreaking that she (like so many) is in this position!

The zero-hours life: Rose Atkinson on hunger, hell and hope in 20 years of precarious work

She is an artist, well educated and determined to earn a good living. But at times Atkinson has had just £17 a month for food and bills. She lays bare the reality of low-paid Britain
