By the way, YouTube subs work with #Yomichan! I wish the same was true for mpv (but you can easily extract the subs to a .srt using ffmpeg, and then search for the time.

The older MPlayer could print the subs on stdout, I wonder if there's some way to do it with #mpv or #vlc?

I managed to set-up Yomichan on my eBook reader. It is a game changer since the lookup with Yomichan is superb to any other solution I tried.
I use the Kiwi browser with the Ttsu reader (https://reader.ttsu.app) and the Yomichan extension. I have an Android eReader so the setup was very simple without any jailbreak needed.

Online e-book reader that supports Yomichan

https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/yomichan/
https://foosoft.net/projects/yomichan/

Yomichan turns your browser into a tool for building Japanese language literacy by helping you to decipher texts which would be otherwise too difficult tackle. It features a robust dictionary with EPWING and flashcard creation support.
