Chris HuckWell, it’s another mountain bike race day, but today’s is special. This is my 30th year of racing mountain bikes, which is a little hard to believe. The venue for today’s race was not one that held races when I started, but we drove there to ride because it was one of the few that existed back then. That said, there have been so many races there over the years once it started being better taken care of and more people were riding. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve ridden there because it’s so many.
That place is Vulture’s Knob, just outside of Wooster, Ohio. It’s private owned, and they’ve managed to squeeze a lot of trail onto that land. I’ve helped do trail maintenance on volunteer days. It’s always been a fun place, where you would more than likely run into a friend, even on a weeknight.
Unfortunately, today will be the last day of mountain biking there ever. The land has been purchased and will now be a private hunting spot. It’s a bummer, but we’re going to send it off with a bang today by turning ourselves inside out one more time. I’m sure some beers will be consumed afterwards, and lots of stories told of past rides.
