A Oniscus asellus, also known as the Common wood louse (in Dutch: Kelderpissebed). Not an insect but a member of the crustacea, making it a distant family of lobsters and shrimps.

Such nice creatures in closeup. They live in moist and humid environments and love to live in old, rotten trees, underneath small rocks and in sometimes in houses. They even have gills to breathe.

I found this common woodlouse (Porcellio scaber) in my garden today. They are often overlooked, but these little creatures play an important role in breaking down dead plant material and enriching the soil. Fun fact: they are not insects, but actually terrestrial crustaceans, more closely related to crabs and shrimp! A true garden helper.

Ik vond deze kelderpissebed (Porcellio scaber) vandaag in mijn tuin. Vaak worden ze over het hoofd gezien, maar deze kleine diertjes spelen een belangrijke rol bij het afbreken van dood plantaardig materiaal en het verrijken van de bodem. Wist je dat dit eigenlijk geen insecten zijn, maar landkreeftachtigen, verwant aan krabben en garnalen? Een echte tuinhelper!
