A Whooping Crane (Grus americana) hunts for crabs near Port Aransas, Texas. These birds were hunted nearly to extinction, down to a mere 21 birds alive in 1941. Thanks to conservation efforts, this wild flock now has over 500 members. There is more work to be done, but this bird reminds us what humans can do when we make the right choices.

Whooping Cranes are the tallest bird in North America at over 5 feet, and also one of the rarest. They migrate from Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada to Port Aransas, TX every winter. This photo is from my visit to the Port Aransas Whooping Crane Festival this weekend. They do it every year, so I recommend you visit if you get the chance.

FEATHRUARY 2025

Prompt 8: Long
-> Whooping Crane

Have you played the game "Pikmin"? If so, does this crane give you strong Snagret vibes too?! I can picture the whooping crane snacking on my defenseless white pikmin :(

All jokes aside, the whooping crane is a super cool and majestic birb who we should pay more attention to - they're endangered. After their population dropped to just around 20 cranes in total in the 1940s, efforts were made to help them rise and shine again. The efforts were somewhat successful, but still, there's only around 800 whooping cranes on Earth today.

FUN FACT
Their German name is "Schreikranich", literally "screaming crane" - you know what that means. That's right: Swipe for a silly bonus panel!
