Attempting a seafood stew with whelk (sea snails). 🤔

The whelk itself actually is not bad, tastes exactly like a clam foot (the muscle part).

Messed up the recipe already, had to substitute in broth from crab rather than the whelk broth, because I misread the instructions. So, missing a lot of the clam chowder flavor!

(The only reason why, is they sell them for $4.00 a lb, unless you buy more than 10 lbs, when it goes down to $3.00 a lb. Probably even less... they may not sell all their whelk catch, which is a bycatch of some sort -- perhaps catching lobster?) #whelk

All the shells I picked up on the National Seashore were placed on the beach and washed away, except for the little #whelk, that one I saved.

The beach is art gallery and the common whelk (Buccinum undatum) is the resident artist. Whelk eggs washed up last January.

That one time I caught an amphipod spying on me.

Balls of whelk eggs are mini ecosystems. You can find all sorts living inside! I’ve found amphipods, porcelain crabs and brittle stars. Just remember to put things back where you found them.
