Well, I'm certainly committed now. My 2008 Land Rover Discovery 3 has been off the road for quite a few months as I'm riding my motorbike all the time. Unfortunately after its last servicing and replacement of the air filter box, driving home one afternoon and the high pressure fuel pump failed, throwing a warning and putting it into limp home.

The car was already booked in to replace the oil cooler which has a leak. The quoted price to do the oil cooler was $2,200 (all AUD).

I called the workshop and told them the HPFP had also just failed and was quoted $5,500 to replace it.

All up with labour, parts, fluids etc, $7,700. It's a bitter pill to swallow. Not that I object to paying for expertise, but it's a lot of money at once for what is an aged and aging vehicle.

Parts wise, the oil cooler is about $1,200 with gaskets etc, and the fuel pump is anywhere from $3,200 to the best price I could find being the Ford equivalent at $2,100, along with the timing belt and tensioner $130.

I've finalised the shopping for the parts, and it's now a case of lets see if saving on the labour and doing it myself pays off!
