I don't want to do this in someone's mentions, so:
You can still draw the line for Tolkien where he actually produced a whole body of material. Many things since his death were produced by someone else. You're addressing legitimacy, which is a valid point. I'm basically addressing authorship.
Anyway that was a contrast to illustrate the difference with #StarTrek (& #StarWars). Every series starting with DS9 has been produced without Gene Roddenberry, but with the participation of many actors, writers, directors, producers & crew who worked on previous material.
Why is https://stnv.de not "canon" or legit Star Trek? Or https://www.startrekcontinues.com/? Because, essentially, of IP ownership. Are they legit? Sure, imo. So are Peter Jackson's films, Amazon's TV series & Disney's Star Wars, in a similar sense.
Things are more complicated with Star Wars bc Lucas sold the franchise to Disney. What were his wishes? Maybe you can ask him, since he's still alive. His wishes seemed to be to get out from under his creation, give up the right to control it, cash in & retire. Does he approve of what's being done now? Who cares? It's none of his business anymore. If he suddenly made new (nonprofit) SW content, would it be fan fiction if Disney/LFL didn't embrace it as canon? Hard to say, but prob won't happen anyway.
Personally I object to all inheritance. Estates matter for legal purposes. Who controls the estate of Shakespeare today? Aeschylus? Is a modern retelling of Oedipus Rex still Euripides? Even that is similarly complicated. And these ancient authors frequently based their work on older stories, legends & myths. Nil sub sole novum.
So back to my original "what bugs me": Everything boils down to IP ownership & in this world, increasingly it's concentrated in the hands of a few via corporations. When anyone buys a Lego Enterprise-D, they're shoving money at Larry Ellison & I guess telling themselves it ends up meaning some good, talented ppl get paid. Which sounds a lot like Trickle-Down Economics. And then parents try to get their children interested, which amounts to teaching them to be naïve about this reality & turn a blind eye to the associated Capitalist evils, at least for this specific franchise. All in the hopes that there will be more? More what? More of the same corporate product line, however far it may drift from its origins under corporate ownership.
In the end, I object to ownership & trade of information. To quote Harry Mudd: "Knowledge... should be free to all." But how are artists supposed to survive? Two words: Destroy Capitalism. Until then, everyone must engage in evil in order to survive. As Adorno said (roughly): There's no right way to live in a wrong world.
From my point of view, original authorship is the only real legitimacy & in the case of TV & movies:
It's Complicated.™️
