Extreme heat: More than 1,300 died during Hajj this year

More than 1,300 people died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage as the faithful faced soaring temperatures at Islamic holy sites in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi health minister said 83% of the fatalities were among unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances in soaring temperatures. Egyptian officials said more than 660 of the dead were from Egypt. The fatalities included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. pilgrims were also reported dead. The AP couldn't confirm the causes, but heat was a likely factor. Daily high temperatures exceeded 46 degrees Celsius, or 117 degrees Fahrenheit, on some days.

Extreme heat in India has killed more than 100 people in the past three and a half months

Data from India's Health Ministry shows a monthslong heat wave across swathes of India has killed more than 100 people and led to over 40,000 suspected cases of heat stroke in the last three and a half months. Between March 1 and June 18, 110 people in India died after suffering heat strokes, according to Health Ministry data provided to The Associated Press on Thursday. The majority of deaths were reported in northern India, which has borne the brunt of extreme heat in recent months. According to India’s weather agency, this year’s heat wave is likely among the longest the country has ever experienced.

Sadly here is a #MinistryForTheFuture related news item. The first chapter of the book is an account of an extreme #heatwave in #India that causes millions of deaths. Sadly, I think we will see something similar in India or South America very soon. Temperatures have reached over 50C in parts of India in recent days and there are now water shortages in Delhi. With night time temperatures only dropping to low 30s there is no respite from the heat. #ClimateCrisis #ClimareChange #ExtremeTemperature #WetBulbTemperature #WetBulbEvent https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/29/delhi-temperature-hits-499c-as-indias-capital-records-hottest-day

Howler monkeys are dropping dead from the trees in Mexico in brutal heat wave

It’s so hot in Mexico that howler monkeys are falling dead from the trees. At least 138 of the midsize primates, who are known for their roaring vocal calls, have been found dead in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco. Others were rescued by residents, including five that were rushed to a local veterinarian who battled to save them. Mexico has been hit by a harsh drought and extremely high temperatures. A third of the country saw highs of 113 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. Lakes and dams are drying up and water supplies are running out. Authorities have had to truck in water for everything from hospitals to fire-fighting teams.

Sweltering heat across Asia was 45 times more likely because of climate change, study finds

Sizzling heat across Asia and the Middle East in late April that echoed last year’s destructive swelter was made 45 times more likely in some parts of the continent because of human-caused climate change, a study Tuesday found. Scorching temperatures were felt across large swaths of Asia with many parts of the continent experiencing temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) several days in a row. The study was released by the World Weather Attribution group of scientists, who use established climate models to quickly determine whether human-caused climate change played a part in extreme weather events around the world.

So the power has been out at the house all day and the stifling heat really got me to thinking: during heat waves, we the people of the United States have nice cool AC to look forward to, to shield us from the brutal burning climate. But people in the global south and equatorial regions don't, and they stand to die from heat waves as climate collapse really sets in.

That's largely preventable, though. There's nothing stopping all of us from raising some money, buying a car battery, a solar panel and a small portable AC, and shipping it out to a family in need in India or Vietnam or something.

Why hasn't anyone thought to do it before?
