A lil’ ol’ Western Space Grunge band from Abilene, Texas
Oh my Goodness! If you have not heard the song Ritalin by Dexter and the Moonrocks, you have not heard one of the most impressive and poignant rock songs about drug dependency in many, many years. Add to that, a truly innovative music video concept and you have all the ingredients for a mega hit! Ritalin is currently sitting at #8 on iHeart.com’s Alternative Top 40 music chart here in the states.
Abilene, Texas – Source fineartamerica.comHailing from the windswept plains of Abilene, Texas, a land of dust, dirt, oil, cattle, and tornadoes, Dexter and the Moonrocks may be the best rock band you have not heard of…at least YET! Their music, described as “Western Space Grunge,” is catchy, cathartic, well-written, and oh, oh, oh, so good.
“…blending the country and western of their childhoods with the grunge they fell in love with as teenagers. That fusion became Western Space Grunge…”

This foursome puts their heart and soul into their special West Texas brand of music. Great songs like Ritalin (be sure to check this official video link on YouTube), Sarahtonin, Happy to Be Here, Sad in Carolina (which hit # l in late 2024), and She Likes Girls are all truly infectious and noteworthy tracks. And who’s going to ever forget the band’s unique name – born in part from a love of the classic cartoon, Dexter’s Laboratory.
The band’s music reflects the struggles, the grit, and the determination of those who must fight every day to make ends meet. And these guys should know — prior to becoming a successful band they worked as a fry cook, an oil field operator, a concrete surface decorator and a kids’ baseball coach. What’s more real than that?
Check out Dexter and the Moonrocks on their YouTube channel, on streaming services, on the radio, or better yet, at a live show near you. Peace!
