International Leopard Day: an uncertain future for the spotted feline.

Leopards are the most widespread cats in the world, but their habitat in Asia and Africa is gradually shrinking. In many areas, their populations are also declining.

According to recent reports from Mongabay, the global trade in leopard trophies and body parts is a worrying phenomenon. However, there are also signs of hope, such as leopards that persist in the peripheral areas of Bengaluru, one of India’s largest cities.

African Leopard
In Zambia, within the Kafue National Park, leopard density is among the highest in southern Africa, thanks to improvements in the enforcement of wildlife laws, as reported by Mongabay correspondent Ryan Truscott.

The situation in West Africa, however, is more alarming. The West African leopard, a genetically distinct population present in 11 countries, is now considered endangered according to the IUCN, the global authority for wildlife conservation. In the last twenty years, the population has decreased by 50% and currently there are only about 350 adult individuals, according to Elodie Toto of Mongabay.
