Researchers have made a breakthrough in developing water-based zinc batteries that could replace lithium-ion batteries in the future. Zinc batteries are cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly than lithium-ion batteries, but they suffer from poor performance and short lifespan. The researchers solved these problems by using a special gel electrolyte and a smart battery management system.
