Well, smart server administrators have some limiting factor in signups. Wise server admins like those at #HoosierSocial and #WanderingShop both do this. Even something as simple as a dialog box asking why you want to be a member will stymie automatic signups by a spambot.
Open registrations seem like a fun, OK idea, until they become a terrible idea overnight.
