@rood Absolutely shameful.
$25k ex gratia doesn't fix homelessness when you've got stage four cancer and nowhere to go. These weren't holidaymakers—they were people who bought their homes in good faith.
The WA government sold crown land with a vacant possession clause. That's a political choice. Prioritising tourism profits over vulnerable lives. We need stronger tenure protections now.

Op-Ed: State Lawmakers Should Hold Amazon, Microsoft Accountable for Supporting Fascism

"A recent poll shows two-to-one support for [HB 2098]. Responding to this statement “this bill would require Amazon and Microsoft to pay the same tax rate as other Washington-based advanced computing companies,” voter support is 77% to 16%. Reducing tuition garners 73% to 17%. Expanding college grants to students with family incomes up to $150,000 gets 67% to 23%.

"And yet, since the legislative session began on January 12, Democrats have refused to act to advance HB 2098. The Democratic caucus appears to be held hostage by corporate lobbyists."

Op-Ed: State Lawmakers Should Hold Amazon, Microsoft Accountable for Supporting Fascism » The Urbanist

# Amazon and Microsoft benefit handsomely from a tax loophole in the Workforce Education Investment Act. State lawmakers can end this tax giveaway to boost higher education funding. These tech giants donate millions to curry favor with the Trump administration and garner contracts in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

[continued] And after an incident, the lines of investigative authority or prosecutorial authority can be very challenging to navigate.

But I think the Washington public expects their local sheriff or local police chief or officers that work for either to not simply watch if somebody in their community is having their rights violated.

This is setting up - by necessity, I want to be very clear about that - guidelines for direct conflict between Washington State and Federal agents.

There's unidentified/masked Federal fascist agent contexet in this, too, since that'll be illegal here real soon.

They're being pretty nonspecific in this because as _they_ put it they don't want to give away game plan. But:

27:38, Atty. Gen. Nick Brown:

What I would say is as a general matter, state and local law enforcement do not have to simply watch or look away if the law is being violated.

If they see somebody being assaulted unlawfully or attacked unlawfully or otherwise having their legal rights violated, we do not expect state and local officers to simply watch or do nothing.

It is important that each of those jurisdictions talk to their lawyers and legal teams, understand where those lines are drawn.

A small number of Washington State legislators who don't understand automated CNC or 3D printing are trying to block firearms and "illegal firearm parts" creation but their bill is stupid and broken.

The bill requires checking and approval of everything you print. It would functionally require massive AI adoption and always-online remote-checked printing, or massive local models.

I know everything else is insane too, but please take a moment to tell your legislators no on this bill. It's dysfunctional and yet another surveillance monster, this time of everything you make.

HB 2321 Washington State Legislature

Say what you will about corporate-backed voter initiatives, but I’m glad that #Rivian is supporting a ballot initiative in Washington to allow for direct sales by car manufacturers to consumers. #Tesla is the only company allowed to do this in #WA; Rivian and #Lucid can’t sell an #EV directly from their showrooms or offer test drives.

From the office of the Washington State Attorney General, elsewhere, some good news for the moment:

Washington won an order in federal court blocking the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s termination of more than $9 million in funding that would help the state build resilience to the growing hazards posed by climate change. In her order, U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman wrote that “allowing a change in an administration to upend multi-year grants would cause unnecessary chaos across the vast world of government-supported endeavors undertaken by states, universities, non-profits, and others.”

Judge blocks NOAA’s termination of $9 million in climate funding for Washington | Washington State

Washington won an order in federal court today blocking the Trump administration’s termination of more than $9 million in funding that would help the state build resilience to the growing hazards posed by climate change. U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman of the Western District of Washington granted a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from terminating the funding and impeding Washington’s access to the awards.
