John Giarrusso III is not just another headline about a cop gone bad. He is the grotesque reality behind the “back the blue” bumper stickers and the law-and-order speeches MAGA politicians feed their base. An 11-year veteran of the Seabrook Police Department, now facing both state and federal charges for possessing, sharing, and soliciting child sexual abuse material involving victims as young as five. This isn’t a bad apple. This is the orchard rot they don’t want you to see.
Giarrusso’s alleged crimes are stomach-turning. Uploading abuse videos to Kik. Engaging in explicit chats with minors. Bragging to a 14-year-old about being called “Officer Sexy” while identifying himself as a New England cop. The power trip, the uniform, the badge—all allegedly weaponized to groom, exploit, and prey on the very people he was sworn to protect.
When his first arrest came in March, he resigned just three days later. Not out of shame, but because the case was about to blow wide open. Now, with federal charges on top of the state ones, he could face decades in prison. But what’s decades in a cell compared to the lifetime trauma for his victims?
And here’s the kicker: Giarrusso wasn’t shy about his politics. His Facebook posts reportedly lined up neatly with Trumpist talking points. He was a fan of Steven Crowder, the right-wing shock-jock who has built a career on vilifying LGBTQ people. You know, the same rhetoric that paints queer teachers as predators while their own side harbors—and in some cases, enables—the real ones.
This isn’t a one-off horror story. Law enforcement has long been a comfortable hiding place for predators who can cloak themselves in authority. The same conservatives who cheer every time a protester gets shoved to the ground will go silent, or worse, deflect, when it’s one of their own accused of monstrous crimes. They’ll say “innocent until proven guilty” for him while calling strangers “groomers” with zero evidence.
Project Safe Childhood, the DOJ program pursuing this case, is doing the work every decent human should support. But don’t expect Trump’s DOJ appointees to trumpet this case. It doesn’t fit the narrative. It’s easier to scream about drag queens than to talk about a police officer allegedly swapping child rape videos in a MAGA hat.
Giarrusso’s defenders, if they surface, will try to make this about anything other than the facts. They’ll say he’s a lone wolf. They’ll attack the accusers. They’ll pretend this isn’t connected to a broader culture of impunity in law enforcement. But it is. And the silence from the “family values” crowd is the loudest confession of all.
The victims deserve better. The badge should never be a predator’s shield. And the next time a MAGA politician waves the “law and order” flag, remember John Giarrusso III and ask yourself who they’re really protecting.
